Animal Feature: Ask A Coyote

Posted February 11th, 2010 by V

Have you ever had a question about coyotes, but were too afraid or embarrassed to ask? Well, we at the Stuffed Zoo know that those burning, if not sometimes silly, questions are out there.

Carlos, our resident stuffed coyote, has agreed to help. He is here to answer all of those coyote-inspired questions. Don’t worry; he’s assured us he will pass no judgment on any question, no matter how basic. He knows that the first step towards friendship is understanding, and that your questions merely show that you are interested in him, and his life.

Q: Carlos, what key do coyotes howl in, and for what reasons?
A: We howl in D and E during most of the year, but in February, when the nights are long and cold, we tend to get the blues, so we howl in B flat. We don’t howl at the moon like some of our other, less-sophisticated canine friends (think: Lovemuffin the Stuffed Wolf). No, we coyotes howl at the planet Mars, because red is our favorite color.

Q: Carlos, do coyotes like to be called by the two-syllable pronunciation (like ky-oat) or the three-syllable pronunciation (like ky-oat-ee)?
A. It depends on the context. If you are telling an amazing story about your adventures in the woods, please say “ky-oat.” When you are singing a song about us, we prefer “ky-oat-ee,” or else a long yodeling “ky-ee-ay-ee-owe-owe-tee.” That’s our favorite.

Q: Do coyotes really buy that much dynamite, and strap themselves to rockets while wearing roller-skates on their feet?
A. No.

Q: I’ve heard that coyotes don’t get along with foxes and badgers? Is it the same for stuffed coyotes?
A: No. Fiona, Buckwald, and I play cards every other Tuesday. They are some of my best friends at the Stuffed Zoo.

Q: What about raccoons?
A: They cheat at cards.

If you have a coyote-related question, ask Carlos in the comments section of this post, and he will do his best to respond.
