The Marine guard gets on a phone and speaks to someone inside. I can’t really hear the conversation.
Dinu says, “We’ve got to go now. Travel safe,” and then in a lower voice, “especially through our lovely airport facility.”
He smiles and waves as he gets back into the truck and then he and Nicu are gone.
The Marine says, “The Consul will be around in a second with the car.”
I wait a minute or two before a perfectly polished black sedan with smoke dark windows pulls up. The Marine in crisp movements opens the passenger door to the sedan. As I slide into the seat I see a handsome, balding gentleman in his mid-fifties sitting in the opposite seat. He smiles broadly and extends his hand to welcome me, “Nick Taubman” he says.
“V,” I reply.
“Finn’s told me about you. Did you enjoy your stay in Romania?”
“I really enjoyed it. I’ve made some fantastic friends. The people here are wonderful! However, getting through the airport was not so much fun.”
“Yes…sorry about that. There are still some holdovers that preferred the older days; but, it’s changing. Hopefully we can get you on your way smoothly.”
“Thanks, I really appreciate that,” I say. “I was kind of nervous about how I was going to get out of the country especially getting my Stuffocator through customs again.”
“I’ve heard about the Stuffocator from Finn. Can I see it,” Nick asks?
I respond by unzipping the duffle bag in my lap and pulling out my Stuffocator.
Nick whistles in a way that surprises me, “No wonder you drew attention at the airport. I’m surprised that you got out of there at all.
Now that I’ve seen the Stuffocator I think we better change plans a little. I think you ought to check in first and get to Customs. I guarantee they will stop you!
I’ll time arriving at Customs just after you and when they are in the middle of interrogating you I’ll come up and greet you like an old friend. Then I’ll personally vouch for you. That should do the trick.”
You could tell that Nick was going to have fun with his role.
“Perfect,” I respond.
