Owl Eats Harry Potter - V:Mission 2 Episode 4

Posted May 8th, 2008 by V

Okay, the trip ended up feeling a little longer than just a couple of quick hops.  It’s a little after 1AM Bucharest time as I make it through the final customs check station.  My contact is supposed to be just outside the customs exit but the airport looks empty except for a few other bleary eyed passengers.

Harsh lights and harsh shadows exaggerate the emptiness of the exit hall.  What to do?

I see an information counter at the far end of the exit hall and decide it’s my best bet.  Maybe I can get a taxi to a nearby hotel and get some real sleep.  Then I can sort things out in the morning.

There’s an ancient looking woman slumped in a chair behind the counter.  Her glasses are thick enough to rival the Hubble telescope.  She looks up at me, smiles and mumbles some greeting.

I smile back and say, “Where can I get a taxi to take me to a hotel?”

This triggers a much longer string of unintelligible syllables, more smiles and what appears to be an enormous effort to get out of the chair.  Then she emerges from an opening at the back of the desk and starts toddling off diagonally across the hall.

I’m not sure if I should follow her or stay but decide that following is the smarter choice.  She gets to a door that she opens with a key that appeared from a chain attached to her wrist.  I see motion on the other side of the door and a uniformed guard startles to wake himself.  He starts saying something in Romanian too.

She responds and the conversation goes back and forth for some period of time.  Finally she steps aside and he walks through the door and comes over to me.  “American?” he says.

“Yes.” I reply with some hesitation.

“You are here to meet Dinu Buia?” he asks.

“Yes.” I reply again.

He smiles and says, “You come to right place. Mr. Buia in here.” stepping back he opens the door.  On the floor is a mound of rumpled clothes, possibly filled with a human form, and a horrible stench.

“We found him on sidewalk in front of airport.  We check his identity papers.  We decide he needs some sleep.”  the guard says smiling again.

“Thank you.” I say awkwardly. “Can I stay here and wait for him to wake up?”

“If that is your want.” The guard replies and points to a chair.  “I go do my rounds.”  he says as he opens the door to leave the room.

The relic of a woman peers in to observe everything she can before the door swings closed again.

I sit down to figure out the next step.
